Details on booking holidays

Information About the meal and water here: Bottled water is available in most cities in Asia and along the popular treks routes. It should be your first choice if you run out of the boiled water that we provide you each morning, afternoon and evening. You can always refill your water bottles with treated or boiled water at lunch time. Do not drink water from streams or taps even if it looks clean and appealing. Please avoid uncooked meal bought from street vendors. Hotel meal is usually safe. But be very careful about the what you eat before the trekking or rafting trip. Once you are on a trek you need not worry as our staff is well trained in hygienic practices and will serve you clean, delicious meals. Nevertheless change of diet, climate and the fact that Nepal is underdeveloped country, upset stomachs are almost inevitable among visitors.

A. HOW TO BOOK
Before booking a holiday we advise you to read the detailed itinerary description of the trip and, if you require any further information, you should contact our office. It is important for your enjoyment of the holiday that you choose a trip that is well suited to your experience and capabilities. Once you have made your choice, mail, fax or email to us a completed booking form with a deposit of $400. You should also consider purchasing a trip cancellation policy as soon as you receive the Trip Guard Plus insurance application form and the "Visitor To" booklet, as this will safeguard your deposit should you subsequently have to cancel the trip. Deposits can be made by check or credit card. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover.

On receipt of your booking form, we will send you confirmation of your place, along with a "Visitor To" booklet, which includes detailed information about your holiday - such as; how to obtain visas, health and medical considerations, how much money to take, equipment requirements and also general information about the country, people, climate etc.

B. EQUIPMENT & CLOTHING
Full details of the equipment you will need for your trip are included in the "Visitor To" booklet which we will send to you when you book. However, the following is a basic list of what you are expected to provide for yourself if you are going on a trek.

  1. A "broken-in" pair of hiking boots.

  2. Waterproof jacket and pants.

  3. Thick socks and lightweight gaiters for walking above the snowline.

  4. Clothing for all extremes of climate. In the hot sun of the daytime you will need shorts or lightweight pants, a long sleeve cotton shirt or a T-shirt, and a sun hat. When the sun disappears it can very quickly become cold and you will need to supplement your daytime wear with thermal undergarments and/or warm outer clothing such as a fleece jacket and pants. For the coldest conditions a warm (down) jacket, gloves and hat are useful.

  5. A 4 or 5-season rated sleeping bag (depending on the trek you choose) and a foam mattress or Thermarest.

  6. Washing kit and towel.

  7. Water bottle's with at least 1 liter capacity each.

  8. Headlamp with spare batteries and bulbs.

  9. Sunglasses and/or snow goggles with 100% UV filtration.

  10. Sun block for face and lips.

  11. Camera, film, spare batteries and dust proof bag. A cleaning kit is essential.

  12. A 1800 to 2200 cubic inch daypack to carry your camera, water bottle's and any extra clothing you may need during the day's walking.

An excellent selection of equipment suitable for trekking, biking and climbing holidays can be obtained at most sporting/mountaineering stores with such companies as: Patagonia, North Face, Black Diamond, Marmot, Mountain Hardware, Lowe Designs and Kelty.

C. BAGGAGE ALLOWANCE
You should make every effort to restrict your personal equipment to a maximum of 35lbs. Many of our trips involve internal flights within the country of destination, and 35lbs is the maximum check-in baggage allowance on these flights. For our mountain bike groups, we try to ensure that your cycle can be carried within the baggage allowance. Although we cannot guarantee that there will be no excess baggage charges, this is something which has very rarely happened.

D. EQUIPMENT RENTAL
We rent out a range of trekking and climbing equipment. Rental charges: 4 or 5 Season Sleeping Bag and Thermarest - $95; Ice Axe - $25; Crampons - $35; Helmet - $25; Harness Pack (Climbing Harness, Sling, Prussik Loops and 2 carabiners) - $35.

E. A TYPICAL DAY
While on trek, our walking hours are governed by the sun. Breakfast is taken not long after the sun has risen (and sometimes well before) and then we strike camp and walk for around 3 to 4 hours, before stopping for lunch. We walk for a further 2 to 4 hours, and aim to reach our camping place by early afternoon. After setting up camp, there is usually time to rest or to explore, prior to the evening meal, at around 6 p.m. As the cold night approaches, a warm sleeping bag becomes very inviting, and by 9 p.m. most people are fast asleep.

F. CAMPING FACILITIES
For the majority of our trekking trips we supply generous two-man tents with sewn-in groundsheets, typically Vango Force Ten MkIV's or Kelty Snowfall Expedition tents. A mess tent, cook's tent, latrine tent, stools, plates, cutlery etc. are all provided. On some climbing trips, which require the setting up of high camps, we may use light-weight mountain tents.

G. HEALTH & VACCINATIONS
Ultimately it is your own responsibility to make sure that you are fit enough to join a adventure holiday. In line with this, you should have a thorough medical and dental check up before the holiday. You also need specific immunizations when visiting some countries and this is explained in the "Visitor To" booklet, which we send to you when you book. This booklet also includes advice about putting together a personal medical/first aid kit. On all of our trips, a comprehensive medical kit is carried.
See our page on Health & Medicine and Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

H. VISAS
You will need to obtain a visa for most of the holidays we run. In some instances, more than one visa is required (e.g. Everest from Tibet). We will supply full details, and the relevant application forms, on request or when booking. Generally, visas need to be applied for around 2 to 3 months in advance of the trip departure date.
