MOUNT KAILAS, A PILGRIMAGE TO TIBET’S SACRED PEAK. Max. Alt 5600m, 2000-2001 

The recent derestriction of the border between Nepal’s far western district of Humla and Tibet’s Ngari province has opened up a fascinating trekking route to mount Kailas, one of the most important sites of pilgrimage in all of Asia. Revered as the center of the universe by 4 separate religions, mount Kailas (6714m) has a presence and grandeur which can readily be appreciated by any visitor to this remote corner of the world. Flying in to Simikot, a quite leisurely 6-day trek takes us to the Tibetan border, by way of the prayer-flagged Nara Langna pass. From the Tibetan town of Sher, we travel by Land Cruiser to the holy lake Manasarovar and the town of Darchen, on the south side of Kailas. On our four-day “kora” around the mountain we will accompany by hardy pilgrims from all over Tibet. The power of the landscape and the indomitable faith of the Tibetan pilgrims make this a unique travel experience.

LHASA TO KATHMANDU, NEPAL Altitudes Max alt. 5220m the ultimate expedition across the roof of the world. 

A high level rides, traversing the jeep road which links Tibet’s holy city, Lhasa, and the Nepalese capital, of Kathmandu. To make this journey even more special, and challenging, we include a 4-day round trip off-road, to visit the base camp at Rongbuk beneath the stunning north face of Mount Everest. Flying to Lhasa, via Kathmandu,4 nights are essential to acclimatizes in this mystical capital-time which we spend exploring the numerous attractions, including the legendary potala palace. 

Our overland route back to Kathmandu crosses 6 major passes and traverses a high and dry plateau-land, punctuated by the spectacular monastery towns of Gyantse, Xigastse and Xegar. Reaching the edge of the Tibetan plateau at the Thang La (5200m), we begin the longest descent in the world, an almost unbelievable 4600m,(15000ft), to the valley of the Sun Kosi River in Nepal. A route which has already gained legendary status in the world of mountain bike travelers with the assistance of our back up team, this is a biking adventure which can rival any in the world.
