THE KANGCHENJUNG TREKS
A trek to the south and north faces of the world's third biggest peak.
Traversing Nepal's remote and rarely-visited north eastern region, our route to Kangchenjunga leads through picturesque
farmland, and then rugged alpine valley, to Ramze {4360m}, the base camp for the south side of the massif. We spend a day here to allow time for the trek around to Oktang for panoramic views of Jannu and Kangchenjunga. Crossing over to the north side of the mountain by way of the Mirgin La, Makalu, Chmalang and Everest are visible to the west, whilst nearer to hand the views of Kangchenjunga are pure Himalayan magic. Descending, we reach the picturesque Tibetan village of Ghunsa, with its attractive
wooden houses, numerous prayer flags, Mani stones, prayer wheels, small monastery, scattered white chortenand small villagers. Skirting the incredible northern flanks of Jannu on the approach to the north side
base camp at pang pema{5100m}, the route passes deserted summer settlements and a dizzying array of fluted icc peaks before, finally. The formidable north face of Kangchenjunga is revealed, towering above the glacier opposite in icy blue splendor. A long varied and sustained trek, which has been called-" one of the most beautiful walks in the Himalayan world."
