MERA PEAK – THE HIGHEST TREKKING PEAK IN NEPAL
Max. Alt.6470m 2000-2001
A choice of 3-week and 4 week holidays
At the lofty height of 6476m, Mera is Nepal’s highest trekking peak and boasts a stunning summit, panorama that includes 5 of the world’s 8000m,
peak-Kangchenjunga, Makalu, Lhotse, Everest and Cho Oyu. Flying into the Khumbu by way of the airstrip at Lukla allows our groups to spend as much time as possible acclimatising in the high and lovely Hinku Valley below
Mera-a factor which contributes to our success rate on the mountain. Following a weeklong programme of acclimatisation above the camps at Tagnagtse and
Khare, we establish a high camp on the peak in preparation for the summit attempt. Setting off very early on the day of the climb, we are treated to the amazing spectacle of sunrise on Everest and
Kangchenjunga, as we slowly make our way to Mera’s summit, which must rank amongst Nepal’s most spectacular vantage points. Although physically demanding, the climbing itself is quite straightforward, on snow slopes, which rarely exceed 30 degrees. Mera peak and the Amphu
Lahtsa: within a 4-week itinerary, we are able to extend our Mera peak trip to include the trek through the upper Hongu Valley and across the Amphu Labtsa (5700m) into the high
Khumbu, beneath Lhotse and Island peak. After climbing Mera peak (as above), the group will enter the true mountain wilderness beneath the towering south-west face of
Chamlang. Climbing the Hongu Valley as far as the holy lakes at Panch
Pokhari, with Lhotse and Everest at all times clearly visible ahead, the group will make the difficult pass crossing into the
Khumbu. This is one of Nepal’s finest high altitude treks, set amongst breath taking mountain scenery.
