SHEY-PHOKSUMDO NATIONAL PARK LOWER DOLPA AND UPPER DOLPA SHEY GOMAPA
This is the largest national park in the country and was forbidden to foreigners until 1989. Peter Matheson is probably the first westerner to travel and trekking this area and his book The Snow Leopard gives excellent details about the region. The park is 3,555 square kilometers in size and covers parts of Dolpa and Mug Districts in the mountain region of western Nepal. The snowcapped Himalayan peaks above make this park a must see destination for adventure seekers as does the park rich flora and fauna.
The lush forests consists of blue pine, spruce, cypress, blue sheep poplar, deader, fir brich and other species. The Jungle River valley is mainly is mainly made up of Quercus species. The northern Trans-Himalayan region has semi desert vegetation composed mainly of dwarf juniper, carnage shrubs and similar species. The park provides prime habitat for blue sheep and snow leopard. Other common animals found in the park are
ghoral.
Himalayan tahrs, snow leopards wolves, jackals, Himalayan black bears, Himalayan weasels, Himalayan mouse hares, yellow- throated martens, and languor rhesus monkeys. It is also home for many species of birds such as the Impeyan pheasant( Danphe and manual is the national bird of Nepal),blood pheasants, red and yellow billed cough, raven, jungle crow,and snow partridge. Within the park is Phoksumdo Lake, which is the second largest body of water in Nepal. It is surrounded lush forests.
